A note from the Director...

What makes a music scene? In simplicity, it’s another word for community: shared purpose, interaction, and mutual support. A music scene shares the purpose of cultivating good music, making meaningful experiences at shows, and ultimately just having a good time. Live shows are the embodiment of interaction whether it’s between audience members or spectators and performers. And these interactions build mutual support: buying merch to support artists, grabbing your best bud a beer, and cheering for an encore.

But that doesn’t answer the question of what makes a music scene. In a 2012 issue of The Atlantic, Caitlin Curran wrote that “it’s an ecosystem idea.” That to build a music scene, it takes more than musicians. It takes affordable rent, venues willing to participate and encourage, an audience to build off of, and the resources to record and present music. It also takes community partnerships to supply the beer and kombucha, restaurants to feed everyone, and manufacturers to make the merch.

At the final rooftop show of the year on August 31, I introduced blues legend Mike Trask by saying that I do my best to see and work towards the Truro of tomorrow. And there’s a reason I see music and live performance as central to building that Truro.

Music is community.

There is no difference between a thriving music scene and a thriving community. One is the embodiment of the other. I read the news about new road developments, new affordable rentals being proposed, new parts of town being built up, and more. I hear of new restaurants, wonder about what new construction will become, and talk to colleagues about how Truro hosts the latest hallmark NS event—the NS Stampede. We’re building so much, creating so much, and it sometimes feeling scary. However, when I look at it I think, look at all the music we’re getting ready for.

And now, I am here to break it to you: Truro is the music scene. There is no division between venues, between artists’ and their genres, and the various audiences numerous organizations and businesses host. We are all the music scene. You don’t go out to shows? Wait, did you hear music at the Truro Farmers’ Market? Well, you’re a part of the music scene. Did you hear a busker on Inglis? You’re in it now. Were you at Julia’s Lounge for karaoke? Welcome to the scene.

And as Truro grows, our music scene inevitably does too.

It used to be that a music scene was an exclusive club to join. We’d say the underground music scene or the indie scene. When I was growing up, we talked about the difference between ‘scenesters’ and ‘hipsters.’ (One wore colours, the other wore shades). But, just like the idea of ‘selling out,’ the gatekeeping to scenes has broken down. Now, the community is the scene.

It sometimes feels, working in the arts, like you need to make a constant push to convince people why art and music are important. That’s an idea I’ve let go of. It’s because I see Truro’s thriving music scene everyday: the Honda bumping hip hop down Prince, Randy playing guitar at the market, Bologna Colorado at Truro Brewing, K-OS at Belly Up, or music at the Marigold. When you participate in music, you’re participating in community. The music and arts scene needs no defence—it’s happening everyday, everywhere, all around us.

Welcome to the scene friends. We’re gunna have fun.

October Shows

The Gift
October 3 & 4
7:30 PM - $40

Is it Theatre?    Is it Magic? ….. Yes!

“I’ve never seen anything like it ..tt’ll blow your mind…”

Nancy Regan, Media Personality/Author

“Absolutely amazing! One of those shows I’m going to be thinking about for days and days and days..”’ Halifax theatre-goer.

The Gift is theatre as you’ve never experienced it before.  It asks the age-old question – are we here by Chance or Destiny?  But this is no ordinary play.  While it tells a story of family strife and resolution, it is full of surprises that leave the audience in a state of wonder.  There is no easy way to describe The Gift - it just has to be experienced.

This is what CBC Culture columnist Tary Lynn Taylor said of The Gift:

“What!!!!!!!!!! The show was the most riveting theatre event

I have ever been to.  My head is still shaking.  In the beginning

You think you are in for a night of intimate theatre and then you

are taken on a journey of surprise, awe and captivation.

A must see and MUST experience.”

Produced by Brookes Diamond Productions, The Gift was written and directed by long-time Canadian theatre veteran, Ron Ulrich, from a concept by Robert Lamar who is also the show’s lone performer.  The Gift is mysterious and interactive with the audience playing a key role in its outcome.

The Gift is a one-act play with a running time of approximately 90 minutes and is suitable for ages 15 and up.

June Body

Swaying between the punchiness of modern rock and the nostalgic tones of '90s alternative, June Body's rawness and forthright lyrical delivery throws back to the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and The Weakerthans. Most recently, June Body supported The Beaches for a sold-out, two thousand-person show in Halifax, and will support PUP for a two-night run in August. The trio's new album, 'Last Everythings' (2024), was self-engineered in an ancient Nova Scotian family cottage. Black Emperor, Besnard Lakes), and arrives with a limited edition vinyl run on Fresh Biscuits Records.

Office Hours with Kelly McMichael
Saturday, October 12
1:00 PM - PWYC

(This show is taking place in the United Way office, or outside weather permitting)

Kelly McMichael is an artist based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, originally from Peterborough, Ontario. She is a multi-instrumentalist who can sling a guitar, serenade on piano and program beats in equal measure. Known for genre-bending, Kelly’s early songwriting career was established in Ontario around 2007 through DIY feminist synth bands Rouge, and later on, Renders. Her interests cover a broad range of classic pop /rock production styles that flirt with psychedelia and provide rich packaging to McMichael’s commanding vocals and well-crafted songwriting. Kelly has toured North America and Europe and joined acts like The Burning Hell, Tim Baker, The Hidden Cameras and Sarah Harmer. After a decade as a side player, McMichael’s independently released debut LP Waves had a breakthrough in 2021, garnering a spot on the Polaris Prize shortlist, three Music NL Awards, and the ECMA for ‘Best Rock Recording’, and she now focuses on her solo career.

Kelly’s sophomore album is a fearless expansion on the classic sound of her debut. Recorded and co-produced with Jake Nicoll again, this music sits in the comfort of its core ideas while being utterly unafraid to try new things, including McMichael doing much of the recording herself. It plays exactly how its maker intended. “I write and record in a way that you’re just giving the song what it needs. Why limit the creativity? I don’t want limitations.” After The Sting Of It comes out fall 2024.

Payadora at St. Andrew's United Church
Thursday, October 17
7:00 PM - $35

Payadora is an award-winning ensemble that performs arrangements drawing from Argentinian/Uruguayan traditions (tangos, milongas, waltzes, and folk music such as the Zamba and chacarera), as well as original songs inspired by that tradition.  Comprised of musicians who are each musical powerhouses in their own right, this “superstar group” has combined their profound love of tango with their classical, jazz, and global music backgrounds to create something entirely new. Payadora is officially endorsed by the Argentinian Consulate in Toronto for its adherence to the spirit of tango, and audiences flock to performances that convey joy, virtuosity, humour, and intense passion.

Since 2013, Payadora has presented concerts and sold-out shows at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa Chamberfest, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, Stratford Summer Music, Toronto Summer Music, Festival of the Sound, Vancouver Island MusicFest, Toronto Jazzfest, the COC’s World Music Series at the Four Seasons Centre, and the World Accordion & Tango Festival in Victoria.  Payadora has also collaborated with the London Symphonia, the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony, the Hannaford Street Silver Band, and the PointeTango Dance Company – exploring the intersection between classical dance and earthy tango.

In the spring of 2023, Payadora’s third and latest CD, the critically acclaimed “Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango”, reached #1 on the World Music Charts in Europe. It received rave reviews, airtime, and press coverage around the globe, including the BBC, CTV, CBC television and radio, the Bangkok Post, NPR, and RTE Irish Public Radio. “…The most memorable release I have ever had the privilege to listen to and review” (WholeNote Magazine). “Silent Tears” is currently #17 on the Transglobal World Music Chart.

They have received creation and recording grants from numerous agencies, including the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council. Additionally, they were awarded a generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts to create a multi-arts digital presentation of an Argentine folk tale told through music, dance, illustration, and words.

Across the globe, they have won numerous awards for their work. During Payadora’s November 2023 tour of South America, they won “Best New Piece” at the 2023 Yiddish Music Awards in São Paolo. Their most recent tour of Europe in June of 2024 included an appearance at Germany’s renowned Rudolstadt Festival, where they were winners of the German World Music Award (Weltmusikpreis Ruth Award) for their “Silent Tears” program.

James Keelaghan
Tuesday, October 22
7:30 PM - $32

Contemporary folk songs, at their very best, offer an insight into the hardships, attitudes, and resolve of characters and events that shape our day-to-day lives. You can dress these songs up in inspired arrangements and intricate instrumentation but, at their very essence, the archetypal folk song is all about stories. Stories and people. Something such compelling songwriters as Eric Bogle, Si Kahn, Ewan MacColl, and Stan Rogers … all understood and mined so effectively.

James Keelaghan, too, burrows into that same rich seam with equal ability and comparable conviction. To quote Eric Bibb, the award-winning American acoustic bluesman, after listening to Keelaghan perform: “[You’re] a joy to hear, just beautiful.  Reminded me of the best of the best of another time – Liam Clancy, Tom Paxton etcetera.” Less colourful but more succinct, Dave Marsh, the eminent Rolling Stone critic, simply described Keelaghan as “Canada’s finest songwriter.”

Truly, throughout a career that now spans almost four decades, the Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner has created a repertoire of incalculable importance – a unique body of work, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition. Ten solo albums flush with enduring lyrical relevance. Take the beautiful but heartbreaking ballad, Jenny Bryce, for example. From any point of view, it’s indistinguishable from the numerous traditional tracks covered on his disc A Few Simple Verses.
